Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust today announced an innovative partnership with cleantech leader EMSOL to monitor and reduce air pollution across its hospital sites.
The two year collaboration will leverage EMSOL’s award-winning emissions monitoring platform to give Hampshire Hospitals next-generation real-time visibility into pollution sources and enable proactive mitigation.
The NHS faces increasing urgency to address poor air quality, which poses the greatest environmental risk to public health in the UK. An estimated 246 hospitals are located in areas with air pollution above recommended levels.
Tackling pollution effectively has been notoriously challenging due to poor data, reliance on long-term averages that gloss over problems, and the inability to identify the cause of emissions. The key to overcoming these challenges lies in identifying root causes that can drive targeted interventions.
A Hospital spokesperson said “As a Trust, we are committed to reducing our contribution to air pollution and its impact on the health of our patients, staff and community. EMSOL’s innovative solution stood out for its ability to not only monitor emissions, but to provide the actionable insights we need to make measurable progress toward our goals.”
EMSOL will deploy its comprehensive air quality monitoring platform, including sensors and camera analytics, at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital. This will allow the tracking of real-time data on key pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10 and NO2.
Critically, this will enable the Trust to identify and gain insight into potential sources of pollution spikes. By implementing EMSOL’s technology, Hampshire Hospitals will be able to explore further opportunities with new as well as existing suppliers and partners to reduce emissions and adopt cleaner, more sustainable practices that can benefit the whole region.
The partnership builds on EMSOL’s growing track record with NHS Trusts, having delivered significant results in projects with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Freddie Talberg, CEO of EMSOL said “The NHS continues to demonstrate remarkable leadership in the fight against air pollution. We are proud to support Hampshire Hospitals’ passionate team in accelerating sustainability through our advanced approach to tackling pollution.”
By shining a light on the local pollution challenges, Hampshire Hospitals aims to not only drive measurable improvements for its hospitals, but to build a replicable model for the broader NHS. The Trust will share key learnings to help other NHS facilities accelerate impact.
