EMSOL monitoring air and noise quality within rail sector

Air and noise quality sensors installed in first of its kind project to take targeted action on pollution and reduce impact.

EMSOL and East West Rail Alliance (EWRA) have partnered to deploy the EMSOL platform at Bletchley railway station. Four air quality sensors and two noise sensors have been deployed on-site to monitor the local environment around Bletchley station. The real-time continuous monitoring will introduce insights that can help understand who and what is causing potential breaches of air quality, driving specific and targeted action. Rail passengers, staff, and those living close to stations will benefit from a service that is engaged and focused on prioritising environmental impact.

EMSOL are now engaging with the EWRA team on how to most effectively visualise the sensor data for the rail sector. The next steps include:

  • Installing sensors at an EWRA logistics and construction site to measure the local impact of construction activity.
  • Working with consortium partner Network Rail (NR) to extend the EMSOL system at Birmingham New Street station as part of a broader £1 million investment from NR to tackle pollution. Air quality was previously described by Birmingham Live as “the biggest public health issue Birmingham faces”.
  • Integrate Network Rail Darwin data into the EMSOL platform, allowing correlation between train arrivals and pollution spikes to provide real insights into the air quality problem
  • On-going collaboration to enhance the EMSOL platform for rail construction users.

The collaboration between EMSOL and East West Rail Alliance (EWRA) (an alliance of Volker Rail, Network Rail, Laing O’Rourke and Atkins) will run for a 9-month period across 2019-2020. EWRA are responsible for the £1.5 billion rail program that will reconnect Cambridge and Oxford in one of the most prestigious projects in the UK infrastructure pipeline. The government has committed to invest £40bn in the UK rail infrastructure between 2019-2024. Freddie Talberg CEO and co-founder of EMSOL said ”We are excited to push new boundaries with EWRA and this will be a great example of how industry can work effectively with smaller business to make an impact’.

About EMSOL – We believe every community has the right to a clean, safe and healthy local environment where air quality is high and noise pollution is minimal. We started EMSOL in 2017 to help our customers take steps every day to make a lasting difference in reducing transport pollution. Our customers across construction, waste, and rail use the EMSOL system every day to inform specific actions for improving the quality of the local environment. This is through targeted air and noise pollution identification which benefits the communities our customers operate in.

The EMSOL team is comprised of business leaders, world-class technology developers and transport experts across fleet, construction, and rail.
