EMSOL Deploys Advanced Air Quality Monitoring Network Across Greater Manchester

Feb 22, 2025 | Blog

EMSOL is proud to deliver 43 high-precision air quality monitoring devices across Greater Manchester’s 10 local authorities, supporting a landmark research project coordinated by Transport for Greater Manchester. This significant deployment, in partnership with environmental consultancy Ricardo, represents one of the UK’s most comprehensive urban air quality monitoring initiatives.

The monitoring network provides continuous measurement of key pollutants including particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO) and ozone (O3). Each local authority will also receive an advanced unit capable of monitoring carbon dioxide (CO2), enabling comprehensive emissions tracking across the city-region.

These monitoring devices meet MCERTS indicative standards for particulates, a crucial requirement for the project. They also exceed expectations by complying with Class 1 Indicative Classification under the European Standardisation Committee (CEN) Technical Specification (TS 17660-1) for gas monitoring.

“Ricardo has used these sensors for many years, and the products have proven to be reliable and provide a useful resource,” notes David Madle, Associate Director at Ricardo.

The initiative directly supports Greater Manchester’s clean air ambitions, as Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, Clean Air lead for Greater Manchester, explains: “Improving the air people breathe is a priority for Greater Manchester. These monitoring units will provide reliable data to better understand the impact of emissions from domestic burning on air quality, how those emissions can be reduced, and inform future policy development.”

This deployment showcases EMSOL’s commitment to advancing air quality monitoring technology in Britain. Following the acquisition of South Coast Science’s pioneering technology, EMSOL continues to build upon established projects and partnerships, ensuring the continuation of British innovation in high-precision environmental monitoring. This technology integration strengthens EMSOL’s position as a leading provider of advanced air quality monitoring solutions across the UK.
